Early Friday morning, the PlayStation 4 became available to eager gamers. After a lackluster response to the PlayStation 3, which was released in 2006, Sony is looking to once again reign as the best video game system available. The gaming console industry is tough with heavy hitters like Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii, which have fared better than PlayStation in recent years. With the release of the PlayStation 4, Sony is looking to win the market this holiday season.
Users of the new gaming console will notice fresh controllers, menus and a lower price. The console is sold at $399, a more affordable option to the Xbox One, which will be out next week for $499. Although this is a small price difference for dedicated gamers, the general public will generally gravitate to the more affordable option.
With updated hardware and a slimmer design, PlayStation 4 has improved upon its predecessor. Early critics have noted that the graphics have drastically improved and that the controller is the best that Sony has ever created. User experience is sure to improve with a friendly and easy-to-use interface.
PlayStation 3 was released seven years ago and in that time, social engagement has become a high priority for gamers. Some of the more traditional buttons have changed, including the ‘Select’ button, which is now the ‘Share’ button. If you want to share a high score with friends, you can hit the ‘Share’ button to edit and upload a video clip or screenshot. These shots can be shared on popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
Twenty six games have been released along with the PlayStation 4, including the much anticipated “Killzone: Shadow Fall” and “Call of Duty: Ghosts.” Users will be able to access an online feature to easily download games, apps and more – an ability that was missing from the PS3. Sony has also released smartphone and tablet apps for the PlayStation, which is meant to promote the second screen experience that many viewers enjoy.
Always Current will have a post outlining the release of Xbox One, but we want to know, what gaming console will you be investing in this holiday season? Tell us below!
